schily (also known as schily tools) is an open source, completely free and cross-platform software project, a collection of popular command-line utilities for Linux kernel-based operating systems.

Comprises of a wide range of programs

The project comprises of a wide range of programs, including cdrecord, readcd, cdda2wav, mkisofs, btcflash, smake, calc, change, calltree, compare, devdump, count, hdump, as well as isodump.

In addition, the isodebug, isoinfo, label, isovfy, mt, sccs, p, scgcheck, sdd, scpio, sfind, smake, sformat, star, suntar, star_sym, gnutar, termcap, ved and tartest programs are also included in this software.

Getting started with schily

To install and use the aforementioned command-line programs in your GNU/Linux distribution, you must first download the latest version from Softpedia, save the gzipped source archive somewhere on your computer and extract it using your favorite archive manager tool.

Open a terminal emulator app, go to the location of the extracted archive files with the ‘cd’ command (e.g. cd /home/softpedia/schily-2014-09-17), and type the ‘./configure’ command to see the available options for compiling the included tools.

The preferred make program is ‘smake’, but you can also use the universal ‘make’ command, as well as the ‘gmake’ command if you want to compile all the programs on selected operating systems.

The entire compilation process will take some time, as there are numerous command-line application available in the project. After a successful compilation, you can install them all by executing the ‘make install’ as root or ‘sudo make install’ command as a user with root privileges.

schily is a multiplatform software that supports GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, Solaris and other POSIX operating systems. It is distributed under the Common Development and Distribution License license and supported on both 32-bit and 64-bit instruction set architectures.
