LyX is an open source and free software project that has been designed from the ground up to act as a document processor, encouraging users to write their documents based on structure instead of appearance. It is a WYSIWYM (What You See Is What You Mean) editor that combines the flexibility and power of the LaTeX document markup language and TeX typesetting system.

Key features include a mathematical formula editor, equation arrays, support of math macros, basic CAS (Computer Algebra System) support, equation numbering, support for custom matrices, algorithms and math macros, theorems, standard word processing functionality, numbered section headings, support for captions, subtables and subfigures, interactive WYSIWYG tables, character styles, as well as dedicated modules.

Additionally, LyX features support for a wide range of graphic formats, including Dia, SVG, EPS and XFig, support for wrapped tables and figures, support for intelligently floating tables and figures, image scaling, rotation and cropping, support for Right-to-Left languages like Arabic and Hebrew, SGML-tools support, FAX functionality, and text completion support.

Create world-class mathematical content, books and theses

The application can be used to easily and effortlessly create world-class mathematical content thanks to its built-in equation editor, as well as structured documents, such as theses, books and academic articles. Additionally, LyX comes with a wide range of templates that allows you to create ToCs (Table of Contents) and reference lists, letters, film scripts, theatre plays, and novels.

Under the hood and supported operating systems

A quick look under the hood will show us that the application is written entirely in the C++ programming language and uses the Qt GUI toolkit for its graphical user interface. At the moment, LyX is a cross-platform software that supports any distribution of Linux, as well as the Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
