Gaupol is an open source, free, simple, multi-platform, low on resources and powerful graphical application for Linux and Windows operating systems, designed to allow users to edit text-based subtitle files in multiple formats. It is written in the Python programming language.

Features at a glance

Key features include support for a wide range of character encodings, support for multiple document interface, support for converting between all supported formats, including conversion of most tags.

Gaupol also features undo and redo functionality, the ability to edit in either time or frame mode, convenient translating, and text formatting, such as toggling of italics and dialog lines, and case changing.

Simple and intuitive GUI

Its simple and intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) will allow you to quickly edit your text-based subtitles in the ASS (Advanced Sub Station Alpha), SUB (MicroDVD), TXT (MPL2), SSA (Sub Station Alpha), SUB (SubViewer 2.0) and TXT (TMPlayer) file formats.

In remembers previously opened files, so you will be able to quickly resume your editing work. All the basic text editing functionality is included, such as cut, copy, paste, clear, as well as find and replace. Subtitles can be splitted, merged, inserted and removed.

Another interesting feature is the ability to a the video file for which you edit the subtitle, so you can visually sync the subtitle with the movie. You can convert the framerate, adjust durations, transform positions, check spelling, correct texts, shift positions and split projects.

In addition, you will have full control over the video file, as play, pause and seek (previous, next, backward, forward, selection start, selection end) functionality is implemented in the graphical interface.

With a GNOME HIG (Human Interface Guidelines) 2.0 compliant graphical user interface, Gaupol should run on all UNIX-like operating systems, including Linux and BSD. Supported hardware platforms include 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (x86).
