Pinot is an open source and freely downloadable graphical application that has been designed from the offset to act as personal search and metasearch solution for your GNU/Linux operating system/desktop environment.

Features at a glance

Key features include language detection, searching while indexing, insensitivity to diacritics (accents), documents browsing, documents labeling, editing of metadata, stored queries, results ranking history, as well as support for the CKJ (Chinese, Korean and Japanese) languages.

Additionally, the program features advanced queries, including probabilistic search, wildcards, boolean filters, time and size, as well as ranges on date, ability to only crawl and index the directories chosen by the user, dynamic document summaries, and results lists export.

The software relies on the D-Bus service, for which it provides an interface that allows it to easily integrate with other apps. Support for common file types, query remote indexes, and the ability to search the Internet and your desktop are also included in Pinot.

Getting started with Pinot

If Pinot is available for download from the Software Center app of your GNU/Linux distribution, we strongly suggest to install it from there, as there are no pre-built binaries, native installers or source packages available for download.

When Pinot starts (you can find an entry in the Accessories menu entry), it will ask you to set various settings, such as the directories to be indexed and optionally monitored for changes, add file patterns, add labels, set a network proxy, enable search terms suggestions, add an Amazon API ID, as well as to enable ignoring of robots.txt files and the Robots META tag.

Supported on all GNU/Linux operating systems (32-bit and 64-bit)

Pinot is supported on all GNU/Linux operating systems and it is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit computer platforms. The latest version can be found in the main software repositories of major distributions.
